It started with one question about Wi-Fi in a New York cafe and led to this day in Toorak.

Olivia and Pete should have met years ago. Same friends, same college in Melbourne. But it took them both a trip to another continent and a visit to the same cafe to finally cross paths.

And now some years later, on a perfect autumn day, when the warmth of summer still clings to the Melbourne air, we find ourselves among overjoyed family and friends, documenting that next wonderful chapter of their lives.

Michelle’s and Ryan’s wedding wasn’t just all about them. It was about their close knit group of family and friends coming together and celebrating them and their relationship. Every aspect of the wedding was a contribution from a loved one. Every detail had a personal story attached to it.

They were specific when they told us that it was everyone around them they wanted to capture. They didn’t want an album with photos solely of themselves and what they did as the day unfolded. They wanted an album filled with the faces of all those present. All the friends and family, those who are local and those who came from far away to be there.

We were taken in and surrounded with the friendliest and most generous individuals and came away with photos that document the whirlwind of people in their lives. The good feeling that radiated from all those who were there, in particular from Ryan and Michelle themselves, lasted with us long after we wound our way down the dusty road from Red Hill Estate.

For our albums, we had to go with the best, or what we’d heard to be the best.
And last week, when we finally received our package from Vision Art, we wondered “Is it worth the hype? The expense?”.

Unwrapping the green tissue paper and revealing our first Vision Art album was like a hundred Christmases all at once. It was a masterpiece to behold. The perfect edges, the scrumptiously thick paper, the fine quality cover and the faultless binding all telling us it was definitely worth it.

We’ve posted up some images, however, to truly appreciate it you have to hold one of these in your own hands, feel the weight and the texture.

These albums do our couples’ memories justice. We can’t wait to start printing more!

As people who document what is essentially a big, joyous and somewhat stressful event in someone’s life, we have the fortune of observing people in their own environment, their own personalities coming through. It’s brief and we may skim only the surface, but we still catch a glimpse.

Deanna carries herself so composed, elegant and unfazed by the little things. Jonathan carries his heart on his sleeve.

These are the observations we made when we documented their wedding day.

Surrounded by their close knit family and friends, Deanna and Jonathan celebrated well into the evening. Mostly joyful, sometimes sad for those who could not be present yet were still felt in that room that evening. We watched them leave at midnight and start a whole new day, this time as husband and wife.

We’d been counting down the months to this wedding. Every month there was an excited email from Kirsten, photos of the little things that, put together, would make a wedding unique and personal. We felt every step a part of this journey.

Both Kirsten and David have played a significant role in supporting our journey also. You may notice some familiar faces amongst the following images. Faces we were happy to see again at this wedding. Kirsten threw herself behind our couple promotion back in July, possibly by rallying all her family and friends that they must get in touch.

These are the people we’ve got to thank for getting our feet on the ground. We hope that in return, our thanks to them is a collection of images that documents how warm, lovely and generous these two are. Here’s to you, Kirsten and David. We raise our virtual glasses to you and wish you a happy and blessed life together.

We were pretty excited when Deanna and Jonathan turned up to our shoot with a car load of clothing and props. More so when we realised that Deanna had a genuine, vintage bathing suit. With their warm nature, this shoot was just too easy.

They’ll be getting married next month and we’ll be there to shoot their wedding and document this particular chapter in their lives.

AFL Grand Final Day.

The temperature plummeted in Warragul on the Saturday that Claire and Gordon got married at Wild Dog Winery.

Whilst the rest of the country’s eyes were fixed firmly to their television screens to see the big game, a small group of family and friends were present to watch this couple’s Big Day.

From the bus tour around Warragul, to the choreographed dance and the speeches injected with humour and warmth, we both felt pretty damn special to be involved in this celebration. Clearly, Claire and Gordon are much loved and they project this back at everyone they meet.

Clarissa and Grant are chocolate makers. They met amongst the cocoa infused atmosphere of Koko Black as work colleagues. Now they are a married couple about to welcome a little human into the world.

Clarissa contacted us a little while back but we waited several months, allowing her belly to grow so we could document this significant moment in their lives. We strolled around Carlton and Fitzroy in the small amounts of sunshine peeking through the clouds and drank coffee in the quiet hours before Koko Black opened to the rest of the world.

It was a close call with the rain. Enormous clouds hovered over Healesville as Renae and Ali took their vows in an intimate Muslim ceremony.

Later as we made our way around the Maroondah Dam Reserve during the Bridal Shoot, the sun broke out over us, bathing everything in the early Spring light. A symbol of new beginnings.
The smile on Ali’s face as he looked at his new wife was incredible. These two looked quietly happy in their new roles.

Then as we made our final farewells in the dusk and left the close group to celebrate into the night, the first fat drops of rain came down. Just in time.

Queen Victoria Market on a Saturday morning.

In amongst the hustle of shoppers, the yells of stall holders, the smells coming from the Deli hall, the fruit stalls and the fish market, we documented Lucy and Michael as they went about their shopping.

It’s a favourite place of theirs as it is for many Melbournians and visitors to this fine city.

And as we let them roam around and become totally unaware of our presence, we could see how wonderfully real they were.

Hopefully our photos tell that story.
