Free Couple Portraiture Sessions // A Winter Promotion

Winter is almost upon us and here at Aparat HQ, we’re twiddling our thumbs, waiting for more opportunities to take photos. As a fledgling business, work has come in sporadically so to get ourselves warmed up and going, we want to propose an idea to you all.

Nothing makes us feel more warm and fuzzy (and lord knows, we’re gonna need all the warm and fuzzy we can get over the next few chilly months) like people in love. And naturally, we want to photograph people in love. In places they love.

We’ll give you high resolution images that you can print for yourselves and in return all we ask is that you allow us to use your wonderful faces for our portfolio, on our website. Yep, that means free photos for you. Winter isn’t looking so rough now after all, is it?

If you’re interested, send us an email to contact@aparat.com.au and we’ll book in a time and place. Isn’t that just grand?

Ruth Allen // Glassware

ruth allen 1

These past few days have been a blur of glass. Ruth Allen’s glassware actually. Based in Melbourne, Ruth not only creates stunning works of art, but also is at the head of her own eco business – Sustainable Stubbies. Made from bottles most of us would throw away (hopefully into recycling), she cuts them and melts them into vases, jugs, pitchers and slender glasses. When I visited her at her studio, I was amazed at the detail I found in what was once a beer bottle. The beautiful logo, the clever inscription or the quirky indentations.

We shot Ruth’s recent design, a jug and glasses set, made from Sambuca bottles, with an accompanying vase. I can imagine some stately gentleman drinking his scotch and smoking his pipe by the fire, can’t you?

Oh, and the lovely folks at Nook Vintage were super helpful with the props.

Cup Of Truth

Cup Of Truth café, down in the fluorescent-lit and art-bedecked Flinders St Station underpass, may not seem grand in its size but boy oh boy, does it deliver a great coffee!

Jonathan Freeman, who is co-owner of the popular spot, and I have known each other since I’ve been a regular customer at his former and rather wonderful workplace, The Premises. So of course I couldn’t resist the chance when he asked me to shoot some stuff for his new place.

I know this isn’t a coffee review page, but having drunk about a billion and a half coffees in my lifetime from about as many cafes in Melbourne, I heartily recommend Cup of Truth based on experience. With super smooth coffee from Axil Roasters in Hawthorn and some fancy machine from Syneso, plus toss in two super dude Baristas, Jon and Courtney, and you get the highly scientific equation for awesome coffee.

And that’s enough words for now. Time for the pictures.

Cooking Polish Pierogi

Every once in a while, the Polish gene in me kicks in, and I get an overwhelming feeling to (over)feed those closest to me with some good Polish fare. With the help of my wonderful friend Ola, I set out to make pierogi for the 5 or 6 people I had decided to invite around for dinner. That amounted to about 120 of the little so-called Polish Ravioli (or dumplings).

The task is not easy! Rolling and kneading, cutting, filling the pastry with farsz and then folding it over and sealing the edges with the gentle crimps from our fingers (just as we had seen our mothers do so many times, for so many years before), only to pull together the remainder of the dough and start again. This process, in order to eventually use up all the dough, takes several hours.

Of course, I couldn’t resist in taking a few snaps!
Enjoy :)

A LITTLE EXPERIMENT…

So I decided to dabble a little in food photography, having been recently inspired by the likes of Sharyn Cairns and Katie Quinn Davies, and if you have not had the pleasure of viewing their work, I suggest you go and indulge your retinas a little.

Here is my first attempt and soon to be one of many (hopefully improving) food related shoots we’ll be putting up on our site.

Cheers!
